General Information

Each semester, there are a limited number of spaces open in a creative writing/process class for women seeking to deepen their voices as writers and connect to a diverse community of other writing women. The project is facilitated by writer and visual artist Lucy Jaffe.

The emphasis of the class is on authentic voice, community- building, and the exploration of writing as a healing practice and a tool of social change.

Jaffe has been working with the nationally known Women Writing for (a) Change to become certified and licensed to bring this process to Birmingham for women. Jaffe is a poet and an essayist who has been published in journals and periodicals. As a long term visual artist she is excited to be able to bring this facet of creative work to Alabama and has completed a rigorous certification and licensing program to facilitate Women Writing for (a) Change classes through the original school and with the founder in Cincinnati, OH. The school was started in 1991 by Mary Pierce Brosmer. More information about the Cincinnati school is available at womenwriting.org. Brosmer was an English teacher and poet who began to look for a community to share and develop writing skills and practice. Since 1996 there have been programs for young women and girls. Since 2004 there has been training for women who are starting schools beyond Cincinnati OH. There are now schools in Grand Junction, CO, Burlington, VT, Indianapolis, IN, Bloomington, IN, and Birmingham, AL.
